 “Tasty Mexican Food & Burgers”

Was attending a wedding of a former college friend, but had arrived a few days early to hang out with friends. Las Cruces is the area’s food and drink capital, offering a creative assortment of cocktails, local wines, craft brews and more. I was looking forward to some great eating & drinking! However we had spent our first full day at the White Sands National Monument. The White Sands National Monument area protects the world’s largest gypsum dune-field, and the unique plants and animals that survive in this other-worldly place. After our day long adventure we ended up at Dick's Cafe. We had been told about Dick's Cafe from our waiter this morning at breakfast. Well, we got our fill of red enchiladas, tacos, and the burgers with beer. The dress was casual and the feel laid back and comfortable. Seemed like there were a lot of locals enjoying the food as well which is always a good sign. We recapped our day at the White Sands National Monument and critiqued the pics we had all taken. Our conversation then moved on to the pros and cons of circular glasses versus aviator glasses. I'm a round / circular eye glass frame person. My argument included the facts: Round eyeglasses are simple and natural, honest and intelligent, thoughtful, independent, and smart. The orb shape reminds us of enduring qualities like the sun and moon. Round glasses have always been a favorite pick by movie stars. Think: "John Lennon glasses" or political figures like Mahatma Gandhi who also use the spherical shape to add personality and flair. My friend who only wears aviator glasses countered my arguments with a little bit of history as well as some celebrity brags. Aviator glasses wer originally designed for U.S. Aviators in 1937. Aviators, popular in the 1970s and 1980s with colored frames, were worn by public figures like Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Jeff Lynne and Elvis Presley. And of course Tom Cruise wore Ray-Ban's model 3025 (Aviator Classic) sunglasses with gold frame and green lenses in the 1986 film, Top Gun. Aviator sunglasses seem to always be in vogue, and manufacturers continue to pumped them out. We then started naming celebrities who wore round or aviator glasses. Pinterest was most helpful showing us pics. Well, neither of us could confince the other to change preferences in their frame styles. As were got ready to leave Dick's Cafe, I put on my round sunglasses, my friend put on his aviator sunglasses (it was 4 aviator glasses to two round sunglass frames in our group). We left with jars of Dick's Salsa and BBQ sauce as gifts for friend.

I had the green chile enchiladas with meat--which meant shredded beef piled on top of the enchiladas, not stuffed in--and was seriously underwhelmed. The tortillas were soggy, the cheese was tasteless, but the chili verde was admirably spicy. The price was right--6 bucks, and I took home almost half for a second meal the next day--and since Dick's was right across the street from my motel it was handily located. But good Mexican it ain't; maybe the burgers are better, as some folks claim.

“Good but don't know if it's worth the wait”
Reviewed September 8, 2009
My wife and I had been visiting Las Cruces for the weekend and rememebr Dicks as being a good local greasy spoon. The problem was with breakfast in Sunday morning. We arrived about 9:20 and there were still plenty of tables open before the rush set in. We sat down and I could see the waitresses trying to decide who would take the table. At this point in the morning it looked like they were just taking every other table not a section. We finally ordered (we both opted for Huevos Rancheros that was good) and then waited. And waited. And waited. And waited some more. 45 minutes to get served! This is way too long to wait for breakfast and is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned. I could see other tables were feeling the same way we were. The problem was the kitchen. They were only able to fill order by order. There was never food waiting on the pass window that had to be taken to a table. THE SERVICE WAS BRUTAL! I would have a hard time recommending this place to anyone based on service alone. The food was good but there are a ton a great places in town to get great local mexican food and if you have to have a green chile cheese burger you can always go down the street to Blakes Lotta Burger for a way above average green chile cheese burger.

We really enjoy local diner's and this is no chain joint. Since 1958 Dick's is the heavyweight champ of L.C. I've probably been to Dick's about ahunrd times, we go every time we're in L.C. We were in town for 2 nights/2 days. I insisted on going Saturday. I had the the jumbo cheese burger with fries, my wife had the regular burger, we love chips & salsa - Dick's has the best and it's free! You can get a 40oz cerveza. Service is no frills...fast & friendly but not chatty - they are busy. On Sunday, my wife wanted to go there for lunch again.... well, who am I to argue?
